In the early years of the twentieth century, some prominent citizens of Bombay decided to set up a Museum with the help of the government to commemorate the visit of the Prince of Wales. One of the resolutions of the committee at its meeting on June 22, 1904 was, The building should have a handsome and noble structure befitting the site selected, and in keeping with the best style of local architecture.

The ninth oldest regular museum of the world, INDIAN MUSEUM, Kolkata, INDIA is the oldest institution of its kind in Asia Pacific region and repository of the largest museum objects in India.

Started in 1998, the museum was the brainchild of Shri B. S. (Bhau) Joshi, who was an engineer by profession, and a keen model railway enthusiast. Collecting train models was not just his hobby but an obsession right from childhood.

The Museum has a rare collection of facts, pictures and objects detailing the historic evolution of toilets from 2,500 BC to date.It gives a chronology of developments relating to technology, toilet related social customs, toilet etiquettes, the sanitary conditions and legislative efforts of the times.
