Established in 1874 by Late Shri Ramjeevun Sarawgee. The activities of his enterprise at that time were those of a Gunny Broker who used to sell jute goods on behalf of Jute Mill Owners to different buyers in and around Calcutta. Later on one of his sons Late Shri Nandlal Sarawgee took over the firm who, in due course of time, was assisted by his son Mr. Shantinath Sarawgee. Gradually the firm was taken over by Mr. Shantinath Sarawgee, who in the meantime, started exporting Jute Products from India, and was very successful in his endeavor.

JMDC, the Jute Manufactures Development Council is the national agency for promotion of Indian Jute.
